Joan Margolius carries on a powerful tradition — one started by her mother and grandmother — by giving her time, her heart, and even her blood to the Red Cross.

Joan's family history with the Red Cross began with her mother, Florence Sayles Margolius, who worked as a hospital staff aide supporting military members in the South Pacific during World War II.

Florence's actions inspired her own mother — Joan's grandmother, Ray Kauffman Sayles — to volunteer as well. For 25 years, she provided refreshments at blood drives and honored volunteer donors with recognition pins.

Watching these two inspiring women in her life, it didn't take long for young Joan to get involved, too.

“I occasionally started helping my grandmother at the Red Cross when I was six years old,” Joan said. “I volunteered doing office work or helping organize materials for the phlebotomists."

Today, Joan follows in her grandmother's footsteps as a blood donor ambassador with the SoCalRedCross. In this role, she makes sure volunteer donors have a positive experience, from checking in at blood drives to enjoying snacks after their donation.

And it doesn't stop there — she's a blood donor, too.

"The Red Cross doesn’t just run in my blood. The Red Cross gets my blood."

We are deeply thankful for these three remarkable individuals whose selfless spirit is lighting the way for future generations and making the world a better place.
