Melisa Kara first learned about the Red Cross after her parents, originally from Türkiye, donated blood. Now, as a first-generation American, she is making a difference of her own by supporting veterans as a dedicated youth volunteer with the RedCrossNC.

Melisa's volunteer journey started when she joined her high school's Red Cross Club during her freshman year. She began to see the bigger picture of all the different ways she could help her community.

“I saw it as a great way to give back," Melissa said.

In her role, Melisa visits VA hospitals with her fellow volunteers to provide food, comfort kits and entertainment to vets.

One of her favorite memories from visiting the VA is when her club brought board games and a karaoke machine with them. The experience brought a smile to everyone's face.

“That was the best part," Melisa said. "We sang and a few veterans sang as well.”

We value young humanitarians like Melisa who are always exploring new ways to make their communities a better place!
