At our shelters, you’ll find volunteers who serve as lifelines to people experiencing their worst days after a disaster.

When Hurricane Francine made landfall in Louisiana, Ronald was at home, bedridden and in pain. His left leg was amputated due to diabetes and his right foot was infected.

He didn’t realize he was in trouble until his service dog heard floodwaters trickling under the front door and returned to his bedside to alert him.

Ronald immediately called 911, and emergency responders rescued him and took him to the hospital. When he was discharged the next day, he had no place to go, so the ambulance took him to a Red Cross shelter.

There, he found volunteers like Nancy, ready to provide him with safe shelter, food, emotional support, and more. Nancy is currently helping feed Ronald his meals and ensuring he and his service dog have what they need.

Because of your support, we’re able to care for people who rely on us when disasters strike. We need your help now to ensure we can deliver help and hope to people, whether they’re recovering from Francine in the South, evacuating from wildfires out West, or experiencing other disasters big and small across the country.
