Since being born, 14-year-old Amarey has faced nearly 100 blood transfusions, countless hospitalizations, and the constant challenges of living with sickle cell disease. Each hospital stay and excruciating pain crisis has been a chapter in her journey that has shaped her into the resilient teenager she is today.

Last winter, Amarey was hospitalized just before Christmas. During what's typically a time of celebration and family gatherings, she found herself confined to a hospital bed separated from her loved ones.

Her mother, Amarilis, feared Amarey might lose her life. Three critical blood transfusions offered hope amid the uncertainty.

“There is nothing that can prepare a parent for the trauma of seeing your child in pain and suffering," Amarilis said. "However, blood transfusions saved her life and it reminded me once again how fragile life can be. It was also a reminder of the incredible generosity of blood donors who gave my daughter a chance to keep fighting.”

Patients with sickle cell disease can require as many as 100 units of blood each year. Sadly, frequent transfusions can cause patients to develop an immune response against donated blood that is not closely matched to their own. Finding compatible blood types from donors can be difficult.
