Meet Undine Lasater, a military spouse whose journey began with excitement and challenges when she married a Major in the U.S. Army in 2010.

Their first major shift was relocating from the Philippines to Hawaii due to a permanent change of station (PCS) order, where Undine had to press pause on her career and adapt to a new country without family support.

“As a military spouse, it’s very challenging, but also very exciting," she said. "Your life is in constant movement, and you need to make constant adjustments to your career. But it’s exciting in the sense that you see new places and meet new people. And it’s an opportunity for your children to learn new things.”

In the following 13 years, Undine moved three more times with her two children and experienced her husband's deployment to Iraq. It wasn't until he retired from the U.S. Army and took a civilian job on a base in Germany that Undine found her way to the Red Cross.

“I saw a poster somewhere on base that the Red Cross was recruiting,” Undine said. “I went to the career fair and that’s how I began volunteering with Service to the Armed Forces. Through my work, not only do I have the opportunity to inform our service men and women of services available to them through the Red Cross, but I also help military spouses find opportunities to create meaning during their PCS.”

One way Undine helps military spouses is by connecting them with career enhancement and volunteer opportunities like the Medical Treatment Facility and Dental Assistant Programs, which helps them develop valuable skills to put on resumes.

Last year, Undine deployed to Lithuania for five months with Team 52, a group of mobile Red Crossers that supports military bases across the globe. Her transition from being a military spouse to becoming a Red Cross advocate for others in similar situations showcases the strength and dedication of those who support our armed forces.

This #MilitarySpouseAppreciationDay, we honor Undine and all military spouses for their unwavering commitment to and support of our nation’s heroes. ❤️
