Nurses for the win! 🙌🏽 Ernestine Lewis became a RedCrossCCR volunteer after retiring from her 33-year career in nursing.

She wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, but she knew she wanted to give her time and help others in need.

“I am a caring person and like volunteering to help others,’ Ernestine said. “When I decided that I was going to volunteer, I decided to join [the Red Cross], but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do because all my life I’ve always done nursing. Sound the Alarm was a great experience that was different from what I’ve always done.”

As a volunteer, Ernestine has helped make homes safer in Central California through our Home Fire Campaign, helping install free smoke alarms in homes and educating families on home fire safety.

Her nursing skills will also come in handy during disasters when people in shelters and the community need health checks and other medical assistance.
