Imagine waking up to your home completely flooded. That was Jae Basiliere’s reality last July, when historic flooding affected their community in Johnson, Vermont.

They woke up at 4 a.m. to more than 1 foot of water in their home that slowly rose every minute. “When I lay down to sleep at night and I shut my eyes, I see myself back there,” Jae said.

By the time rescue units reached Jae and their family, the water was at chest height, causing their refrigerator to tip over and start smoking.

“We had three humans and three dogs that we put into the bucket of a bulldozer,” Jae said. “The bulldozer took us down to Main Street. From there, we got a ride up the hill to the college where they had an emergency shelter in place.”

More than 300 Red Cross disaster responders were on the ground, supporting displaced people in shelters, assessing communities for damage, and distributing meals, snacks and relief items.

Seeing the Red Cross in their community was one of the most impactful things Jae witnessed after the storm.

“I saw Red Cross workers on our street, three or four times a day. Many of them knew my name and knew my story,” they said. “I think it’s been really valuable to our community to have that Red Cross presence here.”

As they recovered, Jae and their family utilized the services offered at the Multi-Agency Resource Center and the clean-up kits our teams distributed to begin cleaning their home. They also received critical financial assistance to help them plan their next steps.

“This is hard and it’s horrible, but I feel really, really lucky to live in the community that I do and to have the network that I do,” Jae said. “I am hanging in there. I have just been surrounded by such community love and support.”
