“It is a great loss. It’s a devastating loss, but it’s not the worst loss, because I still have my kids.” 

One week before Christmas, Tiffanee and her children lost their home in Florence County, South Carolina, after a fire broke out. 

Tiffanee said it took seven fire trucks to put out the raging fire. One of the firefighters told her that it was the most challenging fire he’d ever encountered in his career.  

“To stand there and watch all of your belongings burn, it was devastating to see,” Tiffanee said. “I couldn’t even cry.” 

Tiffanee made contact with the RedCrossSC, and it wasn’t until she was sitting with disaster volunteers when the reality of her situation finally hit.

“They were so nice and sweet,” she said. “I didn’t break down when the house was on fire, but I broke down when I was in their office. I remember the lady, Kara, asking me, ‘Are you okay?’ and I burst out crying.”

Volunteers comforted Tiffanee as they walked her through her recovery steps and provided her family with resources and immediate financial assistance. After several days, she finally worked up the courage to visit her home and see if any of her belongings were salvageable.

“I saw our pictures all melted together. It’s just sad all the memories are gone — everything is gone,” Tiffanee said. “As the days go by, you start remembering things you’ve lost, but the most important part is that everybody is alive and that there are a lot of people who actually care and have helped us out.” ❤️
