A retired police officer and nurse, Richard Bolton continues to make an impact on the lives of others. 🙌🏿 After witnessing an emergency at work, he leaned on his skills to save a life.

Outside of the military surplus store he owns, Richard saw a man on the ground. He realized the man had fallen after having a seizure and was bleeding from his head.

Richard knew exactly what to do. In addition to his work on the force and in medicine, he is a Red Cross Basic Life Support Instructor. He turned the man on his side, applied pressure to stop the bleeding and stayed with him until help arrived. EMTs said that because of Richard's quick actions, the man is alive today.

This is what Richard said about learning lifesaving skills: "It’s better to know it and not need it, than to need it and not know what to do."

To recognize Richard's heroism, RedCrossIL presented him with the Red Cross Certificate of Merit. It's the most prestigious Red Cross Lifesaving Award given to trained individuals and off-duty professional responders. Thank you, Richard, for stepping up to save a life! ❤️
