Service and sacrifice. ⬅️ These are two words Vietnam War veteran and Yakama Tribe member John Navarro has always lived by. Through coaching, supporting fellow veterans and 50 years of volunteering, John makes his community a better place for everyone. 🫶🏾

As a volunteer with RedCrossCentralCA, John helps families after disasters from home fires to flash floods. He is instrumental in supporting those who are going through the unimaginable and making sure they have the shelter, necessities and emotional guidance they need.

“That is the beat of the Red Cross — being able to help others in times of need," John said. "And I love that."

When he's not responding to a disaster, John helps his community prepare for them. His downtime is spent installing smoke alarms, organizing food pantries and building wheelchair ramps. His compassion and desire to give back knows no bounds.

“That’s just it, I can’t wait for the next for the next day to see what else I can do," John said.

John connects to his Native and veteran identities by being a changemaker and adviser. As the vice president of the American Indian Veterans Association, he makes sure Native vets receive proper respect and recognition. He also uses his personal experience to match mentors with veterans in need of critical guidance for bettering their lives.

Red Cross volunteers like John are extraordinary examples of humanitarian leaders. We are grateful for the Tribal and veteran communities who bring endless empathy, wisdom and value to our mission. We couldn't make a lifesaving difference without them! ❤️
