“I don’t know why but in that moment, I locked eyes with James and made a beeline over to him.”

Dawn Mascaro and her nephew James took Red Cross lifesaving training together at the family business in Pennsylvania. Little did she know that two years later, James would save her life in the same room he gained those skills.

During a customer appreciation event, a piece of food became lodged in Dawn's throat. She spotted her nephew in a sea of people and ran up to him for help.

James' training kicked in immediately. Following what he learned, he asked Dawn if she was choking. When she confirmed, he began abdominal thrusts. Dawn began to lose consciousness, but James kept providing care until the food was dislodged and she could breathe again.

For his extraordinary efforts, James received the Certificate of Merit from RedCrossPhilly. This is the most prestigious Red Cross Lifesaving Award, signed by the President of the United States. Way to spring into action, James! 👏🏻👏🏼👏🏾
