“I’m able to help others, give back and put a smile on a parent’s and child's face.”

Wanda King is a volunteer with Children Disaster Services (CDS), a partner that regularly deploys alongside Red Cross teams when a disaster strikes to support families affected.

She and other CDS volunteers are supporting children recovering from the wildfires on Maui by providing a safe space at the Family Assistance Center for them to play, make art and express their feelings.

“A mother came and thanked us because she needed the relief just to have a little time to herself,” said Wanda. “Another couple signed their child in, so they could go out and just have an adult conversation — just the two of them without little ears around,” she added.

We’re grateful for partners like CDS, who provide essential resources to communities devastated by disasters like this.
