Donating platelets to needing platelet transfusions. ➡️ It’s not what Dangkhoa Nguyen imagined this year would have in store for him.

The Chula Vista fire captain has been a platelet donor for over 20 years, but after a recent platelet donation earlier this year, he received a phone call from SoCalRedCross — his white blood cell count was alarmingly low.

This alert led to a visit to the emergency room, which turned into a diagnosis: acute myeloid leukemia.

Dangkhoa spent a month in the hospital while undergoing treatment for his leukemia. Low platelet count is a side effect of cancer treatment, and he is now on the receiving end of platelet transfusions.

While he can no longer donate himself due to his diagnosis, Dangkhoa continues to advocate for blood donations. His family and friends at the fire department hosted a blood drive in his honor named “May the 4th Be With Us." Together, they collected 52 units of blood and 28 units of platelets!

“Just having everyone here at the blood drive, donating to help others — I can’t ask for more than that,” he said.

Join us in sharing words of support for Dangkhoa as he continues his road to recovery and battle against leukemia! ❤️
