"It was 2019 and we were at my son's birthday party. Everything seemed normal but then my mother started having difficulty breathing. She grew up with asthma, so I figured it was an asthma attack and helped her with her inhaler.

By the time I got her home, which was close to my house, she was still having breathing issues. I told her, ‘I am going to call an ambulance for you,’ and she said, ‘No, no, just get me inside. I'll be fine.’ My friend and I started walking her up the stairs and she just collapsed and stopped breathing.

I mistook agnostic breathing for her coming back, and I stopped performing CPR until EMS got there. When they arrived, they started performing CPR again, but my mom didn’t make it.

Maybe I could have paid better attention. I know now that's something you need to look out for. I wish I knew then what I know now.

Through my current job, I was given the opportunity to become an American Red Cross Instructor. I jumped on it! I teach CPR/First Aid/AED classes at the Westside Emergency Housing Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sometimes, when there are additional spots open in the class, we invite shelter residents to get trained in CPR, too.

I definitely think what happened with my mom really inspired me to take on this opportunity. I also wanted to really learn more and be able to teach people these skills.

As an Instructor, I’ve given people and my employees, the skills they need to react in a situation. I’ve witnessed students performing CPR on someone and it’s just surreal. Having an opportunity to see your students in action and react during a crisis is truly amazing."

After losing his mother several years ago, Joseph Morrison was determined to learn first aid and CPR and teach people these lifesaving skills so that one day they could help save a life. We're honored to share his story and hope it inspires you to learn a lifesaving skill in the new year. #StoriesThatInspire
