In October 2013, the elusive British street artist Banksy took over New York City with a month-long residency titled Better Out Than In. Each day, a new piece of street art appeared somewhere in the city, and for the first time, Banksy used Instagram to document and share his work in real time. This digital approach transformed the project into an interactive experience, as fans, journalists, and art enthusiasts raced to locate each new mural before it was defaced, removed, or claimed by property owners. The use of social media not only amplified the reach of his work but also cemented Banksy’s reputation as a master of both street art and digital engagement.

Some of the most talked-about pieces from the series included a 9/11 tribute featuring a silhouette of the Twin Towers with an orange flower placed at the impact site, a reworked thrift store painting titled "The Banality of the Banality of Evil," and a provocative Bronx mural reading "Ghetto 4 Life," which depicted a young graffiti artist being served spray paint by a well-dressed butler. One of the most striking installations was "Sirens of the Lambs," a truck filled with stuffed animals poking their heads out, squeaking as they were driven through the city—a haunting commentary on the meat industry.

Banksy’s presence in New York sparked excitement, controversy, and even frustration. Some murals were quickly defaced or covered up, while others were protected or even monetized by building owners. The NYPD reportedly searched for Banksy, though he was never caught. Meanwhile, the internet buzzed with daily updates, and the hashtag #BanksyNY trended globally. By blending traditional street art with the viral power of Instagram, Banksy redefined how public art could be experienced, making "Better Out Than In" a landmark moment in contemporary street art history.
