This year will be my 8th running if Monumental. And if someone would have told me 9 years ago that I would become a runner, have run countless 5ks and half’s, and even have 4 marathons under my belt (all at Monumental, woo!), I wouldn’t have called them crazy.
I was obese for most of my life. I have distinct memories of walking into clothing stores and not bothering to look at pants because the store didn’t carry sizes big enough for me. I can recall crying in dressing rooms because I hated looking at my body in the mirror and hated the way most clothes would (or would not) fit.
And then I discovered running, which truly changed my life. After having friends in grad school that were runners, I decided to use the summer after I graduated grad school to train for my hometown 5k. I can still remember getting excited after having run my first mile without stopping. And when I crossed the finish after those 3.1 miles, I turned to my family and said, “That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.” I was hooked. Running kickstarted my desire to get healthy. But more than that, running was my gateway into the world of health and fitness. Running has shown me that we’ve created these artificial limits on what we can and can’t do, when we’re really capable of so much more than we think. I never thought my body was capable of doing some of the things it has done since I became a runner. And now I live with an entirely new mentality - I love pushing myself, seeing where those perceived boundaries are and steamrolling right past them to truly see what I am capable of. And it’s so much more than I thought. Becoming a runner has been one of the best things that I’ve ever done. I love being a runner.
