Qween Jean made history as the first openly trans woman to win a Tony Award! Among a number of queer winners at the 79th awards on 7 June, Jean took home the award for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Cats: The Jellicle Ball. The designer, who is also an activist and founder of Black Trans Liberation, was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Costume Design of a Play for Liberation. Though Jean is the first binary trans person to win a Tony Award, there have been four non-binary winners: Cole Escola, Alex Newell, J. Harrison Ghee and Toby Marlow 🩷 #cats #tonyawards #awards #speech #transpride
