In December 2023, Emma Giglio was five months pregnant with her third child when she was told that her son might not survive to birth and had multiple anomalies in utero. For Emma and her husband, Zach, it was agony encased in medicalese. And after Emma and Zach chose to terminate the pregnancy, they were plunged into a political war zone, because they live in South Carolina, where abortion is banned—with limited exceptions—from around six weeks gestation.
