There's one ingredient I reach for in my practice more than almost anything else, and when I ask patients if they've used it, the answer is usually no. It's azelaic acid, and it quietly does four things at once: fights acne bacteria, calms rosacea, fades dark spots and melasma, and gently keeps pores clear. Most actives do one of those. This does all four.

What I appreciate most is who it's safe for. It's one of the only actives I feel comfortable recommending in pregnancy, when retinoids and strong acids are off the table, and it works across all skin tones without the risk of worsening pigmentation that some brighteners carry in deeper tones. It doesn't have the marketing budget of the trendy stuff. What it has is decades of clinical evidence and a tolerability profile that actually meets people where they are. Give it 12 weeks before you judge it. As always, talk to your own doctor before starting something new.
