“Back in March, Dale Ronfeldt’s yard looked like a lake. He joked with a photojournalist who asked if he had lakefront property.⠀
⠀
“Yes I do. You want to buy some?” replied Ronfeldt. ⠀
⠀
Ronfeldt’s home is located in Hornick in western Iowa’s Woodbury County. Hornick is one of many areas in the state that are still recovering from last spring’s flooding.⠀
⠀
Last March, the West Fork of the Little Sioux River overtopped a levee, spilled into town, and inundated the city’s lift station. The county sheriff’s office measured 3 feet of water had flooded the city’s main street.⠀
⠀
Hornick applied to the state’s $15 million flood recovery fund to get funding to build a berm that will protect the city from future flooding. The town was awarded just over $2 million for this project, and plans to build it in the next couple of years.⠀
⠀
Iowa’s Flood Mitigation Board divvied up the entire $15 million fund to Hornick, Hamburg, Pacific Junction, Fredonia and Mills County for flood recovery and mitigation projects. ⠀
⠀
Now, more than 30 flood recovery projects are waiting for the Legislature to put more money into this fund. Follow the link in our bio to read more. ⠀
