The Democrats running for president agree that college has become too expensive and that student loans are a burden, but they have different ideas about what to do about it.⁠⠀

1) Americans owe nearly $1.5 trillion in student loans and students are bearing a greater share of the cost of college. In #Iowa, the average cost of tuition and fees at public universities has risen 40 percent since 2009 while state funding remains lower than pre-recession levels.⁠⠀

2) Sen. Bernie Sanders is driving the conversation about college costs by proposing free tuition at public universities. In 2016 he was the only candidate pushing for free tuition. Now other candidates support it too, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Sec. of Housing Julian Castro.⁠⠀

3) Joe Biden, the current front-runner for the Democratic nomination, takes a more moderate approach. He supports free community college and freezing student loan payments for low-income borrowers.⁠⠀

4) Private colleges are largely left out of the candidates’ plans for free tuition. That concerns Kent Henning, the president of Grand View University in Des Moines, who says the federal government should help students without harming competition among colleges.⁠⠀
