Powerful parody! 😤 That's what Lena Gligoric zovem_se_lena (15, Serbia) achieved with her Pearl Award winning submission to the 2021 Ocean Awareness Contest, "Victims of Ignorance" 💪

Turning Dalí's "La persistencia de la memoria" on its head, she makes an impactful statement on climate change.

As she put it, "the deformed clocks—inspired by Camembert cheese—are melting due to sun's heat, warning us: 'this is the last moment'. 🕰️

The craggy rocks on the right represents a tip of Cap de Creus and it shows the remains of Arctic glaciers that are slowly disappearing as the result of global warming.

In the center, the surreal self-portrait is presented as a dead polar bear as the symbol of an animal species that's 'on top of the pyramid' but disappearing as a consequence of humans' bad behavior towards the ecosystem.

The clock on its back, ticking until 'the last moment', completes the apocalyptic picture that is warning us to ultimately start to take care of climate change that is a threat to all of us."

Our 2022 Ocean Awareness Contest, "The Funny Thing About Climate Change," invites middle and high school students ages 11-18 to consider parody, among many other strategies, as a way of communicating about the climate crisis and its impact on our ocean 🌊
