Ocean Awareness Contest winner Julia Karls julliiaa.lee (17, Minnesota) out here crushing it! 👏 Laker Pioneer recently featured her for her Pearl Award winning miniature sculpture "White Out" from our 2020 Contest Senior Art category 🤩 "My work is inspired by the detrimental effects climate change has on coral reefs," Julia wrote. "As temperatures rise, reefs fall prey to coral bleaching—a process where coral turn completely white. Water pollution, sunscreen chemicals, and excessive amounts of sunlight are also contributors."

Julia hopes to inspire other young folks like her to advocate for our oceans and waters no matter where we live 🌊 "I feel like a lot of people don’t think they can do enough,” she told Laker Pioneer. “Take us in Minnesota. We don’t live by an ocean where we can go and do ocean cleanup or do something like that to help. We have to do the little things, like conserving water.”
