The Deepwater Horizon oil spill was a particularly visible moment for our young artists and writers, and many have mourned, honored, investigated, and created beautiful and important work about this tragedy. 🌊🛢️

It is always heartbreaking to see another oil spill occur, and the destruction in the coastal waters of Mauritius is especially concerning because the spill is damaging a biodiversity hotspot, including two environmentally protected marine ecosystems and the Blue Bay Marine Park reserve which are home to 1,700 species of marine animals.

With "In Too Deep," Cindy H. (Age 17, Arizona) ruminates on the role our collective society plays in causing oil spills. "I hope to remind any viewers that oil spills, however distant, are an environmental crime we are all responsible for. We all depend on oil in one form or another; the least we can do is ensure that our dependency does not suffocate our surroundings."

Fortunately, the tides are turning, and oil is losing its grip on our society. Renewable energy is becoming more accessible and affordable, and more and more people are making the change.
