Protecting earth's ecosystems and allowing nature the time and space it needs to regenerate and heal itself is often an overlooked solution to the climate crisis. .
Because of whales' massive size, these marine mammals sequester large amounts of carbon through their lifetimes, some 33 tons on average. And by simply living in the ocean and interacting within that ecosystem, whales increase the growth of phytoplankton (microscopic plants at the base of the food web), which are responsible for releasing an estimated 50% of all oxygen in our atmosphere and capturing billions of tons of carbon in the ocean. .
From the biggest animals on earth to the smallest plants, every form of life has a purpose, and protecting these lifeforms has benefits for all life on our blue planet—humans included. .
