Extreme weather events create climate refugees—people who are displaced from their homes by the climate crisis. In the past year, an estimated 20 million+ people were displaced by sudden onset weather events, and this upheaval is devastating to both individuals and the economic and social wellbeing of the places they leave.
.
Unless rapid and bold action is taken to reduce our collective carbon footprint, the number of climate refugees is expected to increase dramatically over the next 30 years. .
