Severe storms are moving across the Northeast Thursday, threatening the tri-state with destructive winds, damaging hail and torrential rain -- and even the possibility of tornadoes.

At this point, central and western New Jersey look to be most at risk, but scattered storms are possible throughout the region, Storm Team 4 says.

The first wave of heavy rain hit New York City and the surrounding area around 4 p.m., as the storms moved swiftly from west to east with the most intense weather going just south of the city in New Jersey.

There were multiple reports of lightning strikes all over the region, and reports of electrical wires down in Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County, where more than 2,300 people lost power.

The stronger storms, arriving between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., are anticipated to be isolated — yet the areas that are hit can expect severe weather. The storms will go through New Jersey first before moving on to New York City and Long Island afterward.

Anchor Stefan Holt also reports on a subway brake-puller and a woman who tossed coffee on a Starbucks employee.
