Christian McCaffrey grew up following an unusually strict routine established by his father, Ed McCaffrey, a former NFL wide receiver and three-time Super Bowl champion.

According to Christian, the household rules and training included:

7:30 p.m. bedtime. No soda. Dynamic warmups. Strict phone rules: His parents confiscated their phones at night, and the boys weren’t allowed to have their own phones until eighth grade. Punishment for being tackled: Christian recalled that his father would ground him if an opponent tackled him by grabbing his jersey when he was approximately 7 or 8 years old. Modified football pants: Ed cut slits in Christian’s pants to improve knee mobility while running. Game-day IVs: Christian recalled that during high school, his father would pick him up during a Friday free period to receive an IV before games. Constant competition: Christian and his three brothers regularly competed in backyard football, basketball, and other sports.

Christian has credited his father’s approach with helping develop his work ethic and understanding of football. However, his parents also encouraged participation in multiple sports rather than specializing exclusively in football.
