#TattooTuesday Today, we are making a recommendation for FSU alumna Alexia Bejarano (‘21) and her beautiful tattoo of a samurai with a vibrant red background in an anime style. Based off the history of Samurai and their dedication to protecting their land and their history of honor in their military training we wanted to recommend a comic that covers the story of a group of other soldiers who protected their land. The Harlem Hellfighters by Max Brooks and Illustrated by Caanan White.

The Harlem Hellfighters is a fictionalized account of the 369th Infantry Regiment—the first African American regiment mustered to fight in World War I. From the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the trenches in France, bestselling author Max Brooks tells the thrilling story of the heroic journey that these soldiers undertook for a chance to fight for America. Despite extraordinary struggles and discrimination, the 369th became one of the most successful—and least celebrated—regiments of the war. We hope this recommendation is to your tastes, and you give this graphic novel a chance. You can find it in the Pop Lit Fiction section just outside the Starbucks area on the first floor of Strozier Library.
