Water-cooled engines. Turbochargers. PDK. Electric power steering.
What do all of these have in common? They have all, at one point in time, created panic in the hearts of Porsche enthusiasts. Now there is another change upon us that has been surrounded in controversy... the 4-cylinder engines in the new 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S. I was lucky enough to experience them at the #718playground event recently.
So does it sound like the old flat-six? No it doesn’t. However that doesn’t mean it sounds bad, far from it. The new engine emits a sound that still has a unique character, that still evokes the car’s sporting nature, and that still urges you to keep your foot planted. You’d likely expect that the turbocharged engine has a flatter torque curve, which is does. Though what you wouldn’t expect it is to continue to pull hard to redline, which is where most turbo engines taper off. Now there is also a choice between a PDK gearbox and a traditional manual. In a day and age where you can’t buy a Ferrari or a Lamborghini with a manual, the fact that we still have this choice is something to give praise for. No bones about it though, the PDK makes you feel like a hero. Every shift is completed nearly instantly, and the trans can read your mind better than a physic. The manual won’t be as fast, but any manual fan has realized that by now, and the choice comes down to which makes your happier. That being said, the manual still makes me happier.
So why did I post this image of the 718 RS60 while talking about the new 718 Boxster, which seems like a spaceship in comparison? Because this is what Porsche does best… Porsche, more so than any other manufacturer, has a proven track record of updating their cars with modern technologies and amenities without sacrificing their soul. On a twisty back road, both of these cars would make you grin from ear-to-ear. When you’re behind the wheel, all the thoughts of how different these cars are melt away and all that remains are the ways in which they are still similar. To the naysayers that have written off the 718 Boxster before they have even driven it, the time has come for you to drive it. You won't be disappointed.
