Dressage Diary ✨
.
Winter season is one of my favorite seasons, the shows start and @allisonspringereventing comes down to Aiken. I worked for Allison in college and during quarantine, but now these trips are my personal vacation days 💕 I like to go, get some flatwork boot camp in, pester her working students and pretend I’m still 23, and enjoy Aiken with all of its horsey things and my favorite spots. Then, I can go home and rehearse all the moves and breakdown the encyclopedia of information I’m given. (For my young riders, I think it’s important to have a program you can commit to. I always (even at 32) run my training and competition plans by my full-time coach to make sure we are aligned before I go trekking across the country. )
.
This weekend had me processing a lot on the the channels, my inside and outside leg aids -> each has a purpose and I need to be aware of when and how to utilize each. This is so, so important in these lateral movements to be done correctly. Sometimes in the lateral movements I find myself only using one leg to kick his haunches in, or push the tail out, but to ride the movement correctly each “channel” is actually evenly working but asking for slightly different things.
.
It was the best feeling when the half-pass started to come, how my inside leg was the one telling the inside leg to keep coming underneath him meanwhile he’s tracking towards that direction because the outside leg and thigh riding him forward. It’s like finding the right key in a lock, once my positioning was slid into the right hole the horse starts to come through his back, I can toggle his body… it may still lack some strength but continuous correct positioning will build that.

If you love my saddle pad and those stunning fleece boots they are by @shiresequestrianusa ! Comment “DM” and I will send links!
