What is your horse’s fitness routine ??

Swatch is such a new type of ride for me. My previous intermediate horse was a petite OTTB mare whose base fitness came so much easier. 
.
As summer and fall progressed, I had a little trial and error with Swatch. He was fairly tired after his first Intermediate which coincided with the first of August, a super hot weekend. So I bumped up the hacking and trotting. We ran another great event, but then the third which ran as a one day I ran out of gas at the end.

It was really back to the drawing board of how can I take care of his body and reduce concussion but get my fitness work in.  At 17.3h and a goal to jump the biggest fences, I think it’s so important to be strategic with a plan to keep him happy and healthy for a long time. It was really an overall updating his grain, fitness, getting back to my vets. It’s a little lack of experience, what routine for my petite TB mare is probably not the same routine for my 17.3 big Irish boy.

I started incorporating a water treadmill. By the end of October we were trotting 30-minutes, galloping four-4-minutes, and diligent to our 40-minutes walks. Utilizing the water treadmill I could reduce my trotting. He ran his final 3*** so easily with a motor to keep going after we crossed the finish line. I’m excited to use these tools like the water treadmill going into next season.

I also am being more communicative with my vets. With Frye and up until this year, I had my vets evaluate the horses every 6-months, including flexions. I want to know every minor change in their bodies. This summer, with two horses I didn’t book that work up trying to save a little money, and I might have seen a little soreness I could have targeted then, before I had to focus on it this fall. Swatch feels fantastic, but he’ll go back in January before our season starts to be cleared.
