One of my bests and I hauled to Aiken today for a quick day trip to take advantage of the derby field at stableview.

I am super happy with the homework we’ve done this winter. There’s just a touch more relaxation in the brain as I’m approaching the solid jumps which plays hugely into the success of a day. Today we worked through more technical exercises and courses, and while the coaching is needed and I’m soaking up every piece of instruction to add to my toolbox, the biggest change is the confidence I have in navigating around the course. That’s just come with going back down a little with the jumps at home, having successful days there one after the other, so then the brain is expecting a good result not a crash and failure. I think not rushing back up after one good day, but consistent practice on some basics.

So today when I get the instruction to change my position, or Swatch’s balance, or even have a minor miss, I’m able to make that adjustment because I don’t have the flood of nerves taking up so much space. It’s like I can take all the lessons, but if I’m full of nerves and anxiety the instruction can’t land, my “brain pitcher” is already full. But, maybe confidence is like a ladle scooping that out slowly, so the instructions can land. Unfortunately I haven’t figured out the key to pour out a whole pitcher of nerves at one time, but at least for myself personally it’s been doable little by little to lessen them.  Now I think of it as, I may have two scoops of nerves left to get out,  better than a few weeks, months ago but not quite where I want to be still. So, just keep ladling of our little by little.
