Thoughts: Should the “Average” rider become a working student?
.
I like to say average, because there are those riders who may be naturally brilliant or have a deserving but unlimited amount of funds to take them into adulthood.
.
To me, I consider a WS position like a class in college. Some colleges are better than others, but I’m there to learn, graduate, and get a job.
.
That job in terms of horsey-verbiage may actually be a profession with horses or just to become a proficient rider. (I consider my experiences the latter)
.
Very rarely does my college class hire me to be a professor adjunct; it’s happened, but not the norm.
.
Normally you’d have to graduate, go into the world, and get a job.
.
I think, sometimes a young rider may jump into a WS position, visions of grandeur, and burnout.
.
Just because you put in the time, does this demand your right to earn a living. It may be admirable that you worked very very hard, but are you then owed a career after?
.
I think in my own pre-horse career dream I didn’t know that my WS positions were just one class, and other classes such as how to build my own clients, how to bring in revenue, those things weren’t a given because I’d studied the WS class very hard and well.
.
It would be like studying for Calculus to make a 100% and expecting all Sciences and Social Studies to give you the A before you even started.
.
Certainly there are many ways to earn a living or just enjoy horses. So, I think when going into your WS position, you consider the next steps and what other classes you may need depending on where you are, what your financial position is, what your goals are.
