Normally I trailer over to my coach’s on Thursdays to jump with some professional supervision, but I let Swatch have the week off after Virginia and today just wanted to school some gymnastics for his Jump day. (Plus, half my barn is gone so I can move all the jumps back to their regular place before anyone gets back ❤️)
.
.
I can get a lot accomplished even with smaller jumps. It’s not always about setting the gymnastic super high to see how high he can jump. (I’ll do that under supervision) No, at home I just set the fences at about Training Level 3’3” and below with placement poles in between.
.
When I worked in Virginia the late Jimmy Wofford came weekly to do “Gymnastic Clinics” during the off season. He simply wanted us to get the horses in straight and then this line teaches the horse how to use their body and feets, and I can think about my own position. That was the horses’ jump school all winter, these gymnastics.
.
Swatch isn’t having a massive vacation to be totally let down, but I’ll probably just do some gymnastic work next week as well before getting back in my regular schedule. I can take these two weeks to think about how to better my own position and sharpen Swatch’s reaction and technique over the jumps.
.
(My second favorite little jump is a sharp X-Rail. I might have the rails at the 4’3” mark, but the middle of the X is about 3’. It’s a great little tool to sharpen your horses 👣 step. It’s just a great little tool-jump to fit in instead of continuing the same verticals at the same height)
