When things don’t go to plan ?
.
I like to walk my cross-country course at least 2x before the phase and plan the strides, balance, pace, and route I’d like to. HOWEVER, as a well-meaning adult rider with one horse, I’ll never be perfect.
.
.
Here Id walked the line a few times, you came off a sharp turn up a hill to these two angled tables which walked three strides. To do so, I wanted the first table to come a bit out of stride so I could travel easily to the second table.
.
However, on course I was booking it to make time, more-so than normal, which had Swatch a little wide-eyed. He definitely had some focus on the things around the jumps, not always the jump in front of him. Coming to this combination, I didn’t want to travel all the way down the hill to waste time, so tried to go only as far as I needed to get him straight. In doing so, as I’m riding up to the jump we get right underneath the first fence rather than that more open step I’d planned.
.
That can be an ok-balance, but it’s not going to give me the landing that I had planned to make my easy three strides. A 1 or 2 stride you really don’t have many options, but because I knew two strides out I was getting in deep I calculated that if he needed to add a fourth to my three stride plan it could still be safe and confident, I used those seconds to lock my leg around the horse, sit up tall, I have a soft rein, but uphill balance, so on landing he could pat the ground and fit in four strides. This prevented the risk of him finding a gap at the B element on a tight angle. Not ideal… but plan B
.
.
That tells me a lot on course. After this combination, I was able to get him in front of my leg, gallop on, and found a rhythm. I also know when I get back home I want to make sure I can practice these lines in the balance and rhythm I’d initially planned.
