🌟 Dressage Thoughts 💫
.
I’ve recently changed my dressage day routine at home, and I think it’s really helped our scores in the show ring.
.
My previous routine after a walk and stretchy warm-up, I would begin trotting and cantering around the ring with no real plan. Doing transitions, lateral work, wherever I felt I wasn’t feeling so great would continuously add exercises. Fitness wise, it was fairly strenuous. But, I think because I was continuously moving/working on something maybe not so precise.
.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve considered I do my fitness work other days, and I still walk and warm-up the same way. But, now I choose a few movements, I school each exact movement maybe 3/4 times, walk, then pick up my reins and proceed to the next.
.
For example, if I want to work on my lateral work. I may do the same direction leg yield down the long side 3/4x. Each time I can improve my aids, help swatch understand the movement, then break. The first time, I might have let the hind drift or lost the shoulder, so time 2 and 3 correct and get a better movement. In the repetition I can improve it. Then break.
.
It’s really helped me improve each movement, and by repeating a few times I pick up where I’m weak, his weakness, etc.
.
I’ll build upon each exercise, but by focusing on one movement at a time, I feel like I know my horse so much better, and vise versa. I don’t think this is a new strategy. (The scores haven’t been that bad either)
