Before Frye, or La Russe, Gracie or Burger, before Finn and Bub, I was 11 and Dad bought two horses from an auction to use while working cattle. I had to help, and the other one bucked the men off.
Polo and I went EVERYWHERE. My sitter would drop us home from school, and I’d walk out the backyard with a bridle to go find him. I started getting Young Rider magazine, so I developed a conditioning schedule of bareback trot sets. We’d go swimming, jump what I could find in the woods, and I’m sure I practiced Monty Robert’s “Join Up,” a few times. It’s so rewarding to have him back at my parents. I can’t begin to imagine how old he is, but it’s so special to force him to endure baths, strict diets, and snugs.
