Are zebras white with black stripes, or black with white stripes?

The consensus is: black with white stripes! Under that stripy fur, zebra skin is completely black. The black stripes are created by melanin in the hairs (the same chemical that produces hair, skin and eye colour in humans), whereas the white stripes appear this way due to an absence of melanin.
