The great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a diving waterbird residing in aquatic habitats such as lakes and reservoirs. Flamboyant courting behaviours during the spring include an extraordinary 'weed dance' where both birds carry water weeds in their bills and paddle ferociously, trying to maintain upright. This ritual is seen to be a display of stamina.⁣⁣
