TECHNIQUE TUESDAY!!! With so many dancers at home taking classes, we are going to be posting technical tips to remind yourself of when training at home. TIP! Arabesque with focus on the hip placement.

This is often quite a controversial step in ballet when discussing the hips as many techniques teach it differently.

To square or not to square the hips. When it comes to discussing the hip
placement, they best way to think about it is not to “lift” the hip but have an opening through the hip to create the line and turnout. The hip of the working leg should always be squared to maximum that your personal turnout can cope with.

As you can see in the ❌ video, the back leg is fully turning in and the knee facing downwards to the floor, this line put a lot of strain on the lower back and the height in the extension will never be able to exceed 90 degrees.

Now the most important elements to remember to gain a beautiful turned out Arabesque legs is
1. to open the hip (not lift) and keep that back leg directly behind your body. If the hip lifts and leg swings out, you will have a very opened arabesque positions which we call a “secobesque” (in between 2nd and arabesque).
2. The shoulder and ribs should remain as squared as possible.

So when practicing..... slightly open (not lift) the hip, turn out the leg, cross it behind yourself and square those shoulders and ribs.

Now let’s discuss the supporting leg. In the ❌ video the supporting leg is sinking in the hip. Dancers we must remember to pull up on the support leg and lift out of the hip. If you don’t you won’t gain the turnout required on the standing leg.

An Arabesque has TWO legs, not just one. Remember both of them!!!!
Watch your favourite dancers and look at there arabesque line!!! Focus on the hip placement and what shape the back leg is creating.
