As an AZA-accredited zoo, Butterfly Pavilion is dedicated not only to caring for our animals but also to investing our efforts into innovative ways to support their health. In this video, you’ll see one of our older Cameroon Red Baboon Tarantulas, who experienced complications during her last molt and was unable to shed her carapace. At 18 years old, each molt carries greater risk, and if the carapace had remained stuck, she likely would not have survived during her next one and her quality of life would have been impacted. With the expert care of our team and Laurel Veterinary Clinic, we carefully anesthetized and monitored her to ensure the procedure was precise and painless. Thankfully, we successfully removed the carapace, giving this tarantula the chance to molt again without further complications. As often overlooked species, we share this story to show that these animals deserve care , and that it can be done. While such challenges occur in nature, at Butterfly Pavilion we are grateful for the resources that allow us to extend the lives of animals like this tarantula and continue improving the way we care for them.
