When one species dominates an ecosystem, ecologists look for the imbalance that allowed it to take over. Five over one buildings are not unnatural. They are a predictable response to years of suppressed housing growth. The sudden wave of them in formerly distinct neighborhoods is not just about aesthetics. It signals a deeper upstream problem: we have not allowed incremental housing. As Chuck Marohn says, every neighborhood should be allowed by right to evolve into its next stage. What we are seeing now are neighborhoods that should have added duplexes, small apartments, and accessory units decades ago, but were not allowed to. So instead of gradual evolution, pressure builds until only the largest viable building type can be built. The result is not organic change. It is a delayed surge. #IncrementalDevelopment #Urbanism #HousingPolicy #StrongTowns #walkablecities
