Public space is too valuable to be just one thing. Our cities are full of impermeable surfaces like asphalt, concrete, and parking lots that increase urban flooding and overwhelm stormwater and sewer systems during heavy rain. Rain gardens and bioswales help absorb and filter stormwater. On a larger scale, we can build sponge parks. These are public spaces designed to temporarily flood, store water, and reduce sewer overflows. Instead of sending every drop into pipes, we let the landscape do the work. That means less strain on infrastructure, reduced flood risk, and more resilient climate adapted cities. The same park that hosts picnics and soccer games can become a stormwater holding basin during extreme rain events. Public space should serve multiple uses. Recreation, flood control, and climate resilience working together. #UrbanPlanning #StormwaterManagement #GreenInfrastructure #ClimateResilience #SustainableCities
