girlboss, gaslight, gatekeep < girlbosses not gatekeeping the origins of gaslighting ✨#KinkyHistory As this chart shows, EVERYONE was gaslighting back in the 1800s... But not quite in the way we know the phrase today. "Gaslighting" originates from the 1938 play "Gas Light" and its film adaptations. In the story, a husband manipulates his wife into questioning her sanity by dimming the gas lights, but denying it when she notices. The term now refers to psychological manipulation where one person makes another doubt their own perception, memory, or sanity. and if this story feels like it hits a little close to home, remember to ALWAYS trust your gut. don't let anyone dim your (gas) light! ✨ #ClassicFilm #gaslighting #History #DidYouKnow #hollywood #historylovers #etymology #LearnOnTikTok
