It was 25 years ago today that LMU entered the NCAA tournament second round against the defending national champions. No one thought the Lions had a prayer against the University of Michigan. However, the Lions, according to many newspaper and magazine headlines, “Gather-ed” themselves to shock the world in a 149-115 victory putting the Lions into the Sweet 16. “LMU played as if possessed, stunning Michigan with a record scoring barrage in the NCAA tournament’s wild and woolly opening week,” claimed Sports Illustrated. As was a trademark under coach Paul Westhead, the Lions’ 149 points set an NCAA tournament record for points in a game. The combined 264 points is also a national record. In the game, Jeff Fryer set a tournament records with 11 three-point field goals (he set the NCAA tournament record for attempts with 22 against Arkansas in 1989) to finish the game with 41 points. Bo Kimble continued his hot hand, scoring 37. He continued to hit his first free throw left handed in honor of Hank Gathers as the Lions continued their emotional run into the Sweet 16. #LMULions #ILoveLMU
