Grateful for the reminder that storms don’t last forever 🇯🇲

Jamaicans have always said “welcome home” whenever I come back. This time, it felt different hearing it 🥹

Honestly, I don’t think I have the words for what it felt like going through Hurricane Melissa last October. We went from being on vacation to sheltering in the resort’s buffet while the staff stayed around the clock to make sure we were safe, fed and taken care of. As scary as it was, I knew I would eventually get to go home to my family, my home and the life that was still there waiting for me untouched. I couldn’t stop thinking about the people who didn’t have that same luxury. People who lost their lives, homes, livelihoods and so much of what they knew and had to stay and rebuild.

I never really went back through the photos and videos from that time. I was honestly traumatized by the experience and just wasn’t ready to revisit it. Coming back this year gave me a different perspective. I got to see some of the people who took care of me through the storm and they remembered me just as much as I remembered them. You don’t go through an experience like that and just forget.

Seeing Jamaica rebuilding and watching things slowly return to normal was something I didn’t know I needed to see. It made me appreciate the things I don’t always stop to appreciate.

So this time, “welcome home” felt a little different 🤎
