Jenni Hermoso won the Socrates award at the Ballon d’Or last night.

The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious individual awards in football. The Socrates award is given to a player for humanitarian work outside of football. After winning the 2023 World Cup Final, the Spanish Football Association president, Luis Rubiales, kissed Hermoso as she went to collect her medal. Hermoso later confirmed that the kiss was not consensual. The kiss overshadowed the historic win for the Spanish women’s team as it was broadcast to millions around the world. A Netflix documentary has been released this month about the scandal called ‘#SeAcabó: Diario de las Campeonas”. In English it is titled the ‘It’s All Over: The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football’. #SeAcabó is the social media hashtag which Hermoso spearheaded and was seen as Spain’s Me Too movement. Speaking at the ceremony, Hermoso said, “women's football deserves a place for new and future generations.” "I'd like to ask all of you to get together and work together in order to make a better world possible and to make football become what little girls deserve for the future." #ballondor #football #SeAcabó #metoo
