May 9th marks Victory Day in Russia, which celebrates the country’s victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. The parade sees armoured vehicles and thousands of servicemen march in Red Square, Moscow, the capital of Russia. President Putin used his Victory Day speech to remind the world that Russia’s combat forces were “always in combat readiness”. But Putin did acknowledge that the country was going through a “difficult period” - only one tank was present in the military parade, with so many of its resources being directed to the war with Ukraine. This week marks the start of Putin’s fifth term in office, after he won 87% of the vote in an election where no other credible candidates were able to stand. #russia #victoryday #putin #politics #news
