IOWA STATE MIGHT OWE COLLEGE FOOTBALL AN APOLOGY 😭

In 2011, Oklahoma State was 10–0, No. 2 in the BCS and two wins from a likely title shot. Then the Cowboys blew a 24–7 lead in Ames and lost 37–31 in double OT. They still won the Big 12, but Alabama got the title spot instead. LSU had already beaten Bama 9–6, so we got the rematch anyway. Bama won 21–0, and the backlash helped finish off the BCS. Its own founder, Roy Kramer, called the Iowa State game “the defining game.” Seven months after that upset, presidents approved a four-team playoff. It debuted in 2014, grew to 12 teams in 2024, and now ESPN reports a deal for 24 in 2027 is close, pending final approval.

We probably still get a playoff eventually. But are we talking about 24 teams right now if Oklahoma State just wins that game? 👀
